PHYLLIS JEAN GRAVETT SMITH SWAFFAR
Phyllis Swaffar, age 86, of Lancaster, Kentucky passed away Sunday, February 26th, 2023 in her home surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born in Winchester, Kentucky on January 11, 1937 to Jesse Oliver and Virgie Alexander Gravett. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Eastern Kentucky State College (now University) in 1959, a considerable accomplishment for a woman of that time. She was joined in marriage to Michael George Swaffar on January 25, 1978. She would later go on to earn a master’s degree in school counseling at Eastern Kentucky University. She loved the students of Garrard County and worked as both a math teacher and a guidance counselor during her tenure at Garrard County High School before retiring in 1991. She also coached the Garrard County High School Girls’ Tennis Team for many years and helped lead them to their very first region championship. She was also a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster. She had a great love for traveling, tennis, horses, and her family. Above all, she loved being a mother to her only son, Sean.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gerwood Bruce Gravett of Jupiter, Fl. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Sean Clay Smith (Page) of Lancaster, KY; two grandsons, Ethan Smith (Brooke) of Lancaster, KY; and Evan Smith (Lily) of Surprise, AZ; one granddaughter, Emily Perkins (Trey) of LaGrange, KY; her brother, Ray Alexander Gravett (Darlene) of Boiling Springs, NC; a stepson, Steven Swaffar (Donna) of Ardmore, OK; two grandsons, Nathan Swaffar of Lawrence, KS; and Tyler Swaffar of Kansas City, MO; four great grandchildren, Jaxon, Ellasyn, Carrigan, and Leighton Perkins, all of LaGrange, KY; a sister-in-law, Ethel Gravett, of Hobe Sound, Fl; three nephews, Anthony Gravett (Terri), Jeffrey Gravett (Susan), and Phillip Gravett (Donna), all of Florida; one niece, Leslie Dellinger (Eric), of Lexington, SC; and several great nephews and nieces. She also leaves behind her much loved and devoted dog, Wolf.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Denny officiating and burial following at Paint Lick Cemetery. Pallbearers include Sean Smith, Ethan Smith, Tyler Swaffar, Jaxon Perkins, Tremayne Perkins, Nathan Swaffar & Steve Swaffar. Honorary pallbearers will be Evan Smith, Lita Leavell, Donna Powell & Karen Powell. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until service time on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home.
